005: I've been a bad, bad girl.

February 8th, 2010 at 02:06 am

I have not updated in a few days. Reason being that I've been bad, and I'm pretty ashamed of myself.

I haven't been tracking how much I've spent, but now I'm down to my last thirty-five dollars. This is it. I have no idea what to do for groceries. I've been subsisting off whatever I can find in my fridge and cupboards. For instance, today I've consumed a banana with several globs of natural peanut butter and a small bowl of popcorn with salt and olive oil.

I don't know what to make this week. I have a can of tomatoes and two cans of beans. I guess I could make

chili. There is an unopened jar of salsa in my fridge, I just saw. Woohoo!

I have $25.00 in my US account, but I'd like to keep that. I guess I'll wait and see. If I'm in decent shape on Friday, I should be okay until pay day (February 15).

Also, a person I know is leaving the country at the end of the month. The person wants to go to

Earls (PDF file) on Saturday. I want to see this person off, but I only want to spend about ten bucks. Would it be tacky of me to stuff myself before I leave and then go there and not eat anything?

And then I'm going to see the Chinese New Year's parade the next day, and my friend would like to go to a Chinese restaurant for lunch. I'm thinking... big breakfast or something really cheap? Augh. It's awkward when my friends have way much more money than I do.

Also... Olympics in five days. Blah. Katarina Witt (whom I love... when I was little, I marvelled over her height. She just seemed to tower over other skaters) and Elizabeth Manley (whom I also love-- go, Canada!) skated downtown today. I can't believe I missed that! But it was very crowded, and some people had to hold their cameras over their heads because they couldn't see the skaters.

Hope you guys are well. Please wish me luck this week. I'll need it.

P.S. I don't have a TV, but I wish I could watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. Twitter is telling me about a Letterman/Oprah/Leno (ick) commercial? Oh, well, that's what YouTube is for!

Edit: Found some receipts. Here we go.

If you've only got $35 till the 15th and need groceries, I think you'd better not go out with your friends. Eating out will gobble that money up. I recommend you tell them it's just not a good time right now.

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking of not spending very much on groceries this week so I could hang out with them. But eating out really adds up, as I've learned (the hard way).

Eat before you go and just get a drink, a soft drink.

Since you are down to your last $25, we aren't going to say ... that's alright, do what you want. Smile This is frugal crunch time.

Its not tacky to eat before you go ... its a time-honored tactic. Another time honored tactic is to set a time (30 min - 1 hr) to stay at your social function and use a little white lie to excuse yourself at that time. Good white lies are: pet is sick, have a family issue that you have to be home for, etc. Be seen, send off the best wishes to your friend, get out. I would even go so far as to go to the event for the first 15 minutes, apologize w/your reasonable excuse, but say that sending you off means a lot to you and you wanted to do it.

You are in a crunch right now but if you resolve it for this month, next month will be better. Also, while it is awkward if your friends appear to have more money than you, but you really can't think about it this week. You have to do what you have to do for YOUR finances.

You could also say that you had a previous event where you ate, and are still full from that (the previous event being... eating at home, at the table, next to your cat... or whatever)

I am the master of eating before I go, and ordering a soda while out with friends. BEats staying home. It may be tacky, but not as tacky as spending more than you have. Wink OF course, I just tell people like it is. "Dinner isn't in my budget."

Hang in there! I usually manage to be around $30-40 a week for groceries- lots of cheap eating ideas out there, if you need a little inspiration-fried rice made with soy sauce and whatever you have around- odds and ends of frozen vegetables, an egg, etc, pasta with some olive oil and seasoning, even making ramen with some garlic and an egg white dropped in. Heck, where I live cornbread mix costs $0.40/box. It will be tight, but you can definitely make it to payday still fed!
